ARM YOURSELF AGAINST FRAUD
Protect yourself against all types of frauds.  Visit Looks Too Good To Be True, a helpful web site that informs you, the American Consumer, about defending yourself from becoming a victim of fraud.

Be advised of phishing scams using NCUA's name and logo.  Additional details and information can be found on the National Credit Union Administration web site.

Please do not respond to emails that may seem like they are sent by SFCU and requesting your:
  • Online Banking Access code
  • Credit Card Number
  • Account Access code
  • Credit Card Expiration date
  • ATM Card PIN
  • Credit Card PIN
They may seem reasonable to answer but the credit union never requests information via email.  SFCU utilizes various measures to protect your privacy and understands the concern over security.  Please contact the credit union about any such solicitation immediately or simply delete, do not open.
For more information regarding our privacy policy, please click here.

If you would like to report Identity Theft concerns, Phishing attempts, scam emails, etc., you may consider submitting the following Federal Trade Commision's Consumer Complaint Form.  Please remember, your credit union would never request you to give them personal information to update your account via email or internet communication.

NO PHISHING
Phishers send spam or pop-up messages claiming to be from a business or organization that you deal with such as your internet service provider, credit union, payment service or even a government agency.  The message usually asks you to update or validate your account information and may threaten some dire consequence if you don't.  Be aware!

FRAUDULENT MONEY ORDERS
A new type of fraud has surfaced concerning Money Orders. Please be aware if you receive a Money Order in the mail (usually from someone who has first contacted you through email) and you are being directed to immediately cash the Money Order and forward the money to the sender that this may be a scam. Usually in return for depositing the Money Order you are offered to keep 10% for yourself.  This is a scam that can result in your loss of the entire amount of each Money Order cashed against your account.

F
RAUDULENT eMAILS
Be aware of emails that appear to be from NCUA.  The message includes NCUA's logo and is addressed to "Credit Union holder account".  The email contains a link to "FCU activation page" where it requests that the recipient provide confidential information via an online form.  It then concludes with "National Credit Union Administration Team apologize for any inconvenience".

Please be advised that these emails are not being sent by NCUA, and if you receive an unsolicited email alleging to be from NCUA, take the following steps:

1. Forward the entire email to Phishing@ncua.gov
2. Do not open any attachments to the email, in case it contains malicious codes that will infect your computer.
3. If you received this or a similar hoax, please file a complaint at
www.ic3.gov

If any member receives an email of this nature, please delete the email and do not respond to it.

Please be aware that if you have received money orders in the mail with instructions to cash them and send a portion of the money back to the originating party, you may be the victim of a scam.

FRAUDULENT CHECKS
Think you can't get "faked-out"?  Fake checks could cost you thousands.  Avoid check scams by finding out more at www.fakechecks.org.

A SFCU member recently received an email looking like it was sent by NAFCU (National Association Federal Credit Unions) requesting to update personal records through the link provided or the account would be deleted.  Our member had been aware to delete the email and contact the credit union to notify us of this latest of phishing attempts.  NAFCU is a respected and influential trade association that exclusively represents the interests of federal credit unions before the federal government and the public. NAFCU would never request such information from our members.

DONT TAKE THE BAIT.
Legitimate organizations don't ask for this information via email.  Do not open attachments from people you don't know or don't expect.  And never reply to or click on links in emails or pop-ups that ask for personal information.
